Sensing Living Systems meets Shaken Grounds

Angewandte Research Exchange

Applied Performance Lab
New House for Art and Science, Mezzanine floor
Georg-Coch-Platz 2, 1010 Vienna

The two FWF PEEK research projects SENSING LIVING SYSTEMS - Exploring the Potentials of Multisensory Scenography for Systems Awareness and SHAKEN GROUNDS. SEISMOGRAPHY OF PRECARIOUS PRESENCES will enter into dialogue with an invited audience of experts to reflect on the state of their artistic practice, methods and approaches. A temporary landscape of ideas and a communal dinner will provide space for dialogue.

The artist and researcher duo MUELLER-DIVJAK (Jeanette Müller and Paul Divjak), who conceived SENSING LIVING SYSTEMS, are collaborating with the Angewandte Interdisciplinary Lab under the direction of Alexandra Graupner and international artists and systems scientists to design experiential spaces and create sensory impressions that help us to resonate with systems. With a special focus on the senses of smell, hearing and touch, the project explores how direct sensory experiences through artistic stagings of olfactory, auditory and haptic artworks and stimuli, i.e. using specially designed spaces and settings, can help to raise our awareness and develop a deep understanding of living systems and impart systems competence.

Shaken Grounds. Seismography of Precarious Presences is realised by Nikolaus Gansterer, Mariella Greil, Peter Kozek and Lucie Strecker in cooperation with the Angewandte Performance Lab and international partners. The project deals with a geological time that goes beyond the individual human lifespan. It examines cultural practices that emerged along seismic activity of volcanoes, fissures or caves and support a changed perception of time that leads to more responsibility towards the future. The project team is developing new, hybrid rituals at sites of both natural and human-induced ground shaking to highlight the interactions between geological ruptures and social precarity.
